Summary: Set in Roman-occupied Palestine during the time of Jesus' ministry, this book tells the story of Daniel bar Jamin, who is orphaned after his father is crucified and his mother dies from grief. The event leaves him with so much hatred that he joins a band of outlaws who's goal is to rid Palestine of the Romans. For many years he hides out in the mountains, waiting for the time when he can exact his revenge. In nearby Capernaum, however, a new rabbi named Jesus is preaching a different kind of retaliation - one based on love. At first, Daniel is disappointed that Jesus isn't willing to fight for his country. After repeated meetings, though, Daniel begins to wonder if Jesus' way is better.

Major Characters: Daniel, Joel, Matthace, Leah, Rosh, Jesus

Comments: Won 1967 Newbery Medal. Speare uses great characterization. There is action with a touch of romance, and even though the book is quite old now, the themes still apply to today's world. This is a great book for anyone, but especially for male, or Christian readers.
